Description
Roland the Farter, also known as Roland le Fartere, Roulandus le Fartere, Rollandus le Pettus, or Roland le Petour, was a famous medieval flatulist in 12th-century England. Renowned for his unique comedic talent, Roland served as a court jester to King Henry II. In recognition of his performances, which included an annual act involving "a jump, a whistle, and a fart performed simultaneously" ("saltum, siffletum, pettum"), he was rewarded with the manor of Hemingstone in Suffolk and 30 acres (12 hectares) of land.
Roland's name appears in the Liber Feodorum (Book of Fees), a 13th-century English record of landholdings, confirming his historical role as perhaps the most well-compensated flatulist in history. His legacy lives on as one of the strangest yet most intriguing figures in medieval entertainment.
